What is White Elephant?
White Elephant is a gift exchange game where everyone brings one wrapped gift — usually something fun, gag-worthy, or capped at a set price — and adds it to a shared pile. Unlike Secret Santa, nobody is assigned a specific person to shop for, and gifts don't stay with whoever unwraps them first: the whole game revolves around stealing gifts back and forth. It's also known as Yankee Swap or a Dirty Santa exchange, depending on where you're from.
How to play, step by step
- Everyone brings one wrapped gift and puts it in a central pile. Most groups agree on a price limit ahead of time.
- Determine turn order — draw numbers, draw names, or just go around the room.
- Player 1 opens a gift from the pile. That's the only turn where there's nothing yet to steal.
- Every player after that chooses: unwrap a new gift from the pile, or steal an already-opened gift from someone else.
- Whoever just got stolen from goes again — they either steal from someone else or open a new gift, continuing the chain.
- Cap steals per gift (2–3 is common) so a popular gift doesn't get stolen forever — once it hits the limit, it's "frozen" for the rest of the round.
- Game ends once every gift has been opened and no steals remain.

Is White Elephant the same as Secret Santa?
No. Secret Santa secretly assigns each person one other person to buy a gift for, and only that gift changes hands.
